2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, 2K president a key figure notified team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the need for a distinct vision.
The president noted that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
Trend of Key Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete content from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. After some time of discussions, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the development of the game in the time to follow.
The President
Background of the New Leader
The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Concept
Project Ethos was revealed in last year together with a early access event. Initially, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Face the rivals with unique powers, risks, and tests that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and hope your team can secure victory? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an official launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as production progresses.
