The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
